What to Expect After Your Root Canal Treatment?
After your root canal procedure is completed, your mouth can feel tender. It is normal to expect a little amount of pain. Dr. Sayman will place a temporary filling until the permanent filling or crown is ready to be placed by your general dentist. Typically, the pain should not last longer than 2 to 4 days.
Right After the Root Canal Procedure
Expect to have your mouth feeling numb and the jaw feeling sore for some time after the procedure. Our endodontist will advise you on all the steps and precautions you need to take. It is essential to avoid eating anything during the first few hours, especially that involves chewing or drinking something hot.
You don’t want to risk biting down hard on the treated tooth or burning your oral tissue. You may be prescribed a pain reliever that can be used if the pain or discomfort increases.
For the Next Few Days
For the next few days, it is recommended to take the following post-root canal care measures:
- Keep taking your prescribed medication
- Stick to softer foods
- Try to chew using the side of the mouth opposite the treated tooth
You should expect the pain to subside within a few days.

- The bite feels uncomfortable
- The temporary filling falls out
- The swelling persists after day two
- The symptoms before the procedure return, such as pain or swelling in the gums
